# GitHub

> Organization-wide GitHub connection for versioning Notebooks and Queries.

The **GitHub** integration connects your [organization](https://docs.nekt.com/organizations.md) to a GitHub organization through the Nekt GitHub App, and the connection is shared by every workspace. Once connected, you can use **GitHub Versioning** for [Notebooks](https://docs.nekt.com/notebooks/versioning.md) and [Queries](https://docs.nekt.com/queries/versioning.md): link each resource to a repository and branch, and Nekt keeps the code in sync in both directions.

> [!NOTE]
>
> GitHub Versioning is **only available on Growth or Custom plans**.

## Connect your GitHub organization

Before linking repositories to individual Notebooks or Queries, an organization Owner or Admin must connect the organization to GitHub. Each organization connects to one GitHub organization or user account, shared across all of its workspaces.

**1. Start from Nekt**

Go to **Organization settings → GitHub** in Nekt and click **Connect to GitHub**.

**2. Install the Nekt GitHub App**

On GitHub, pick the organization and, under **Repository access**, choose **Only select repositories** and select the repositories that will hold your code. Nekt only needs access to those.

**3. Return to Nekt**

GitHub redirects you back to Nekt, and **Organization settings → GitHub** shows the connected organization.

> [!WARNING]
>
> * **Install as an owner of the GitHub organization.** GitHub only lets organization owners install apps. If you are not an owner, ask one to run the steps above.
> * **Start the installation from Nekt, and finish it in the same browser session.** An installation started directly on github.com, or interrupted by switching GitHub accounts, is not linked to your organization. If that happens, uninstall the Nekt GitHub App in your organization's GitHub settings and connect again from **Organization settings → GitHub**.

To give Nekt access to more repositories later, open your GitHub organization's **Settings → GitHub Apps**, click **Configure** next to the Nekt app, and update its repository access.

## Remove the connection

Clicking **Remove** in **Organization settings → GitHub** uninstalls the Nekt GitHub App from your GitHub organization and unlinks every Notebook and Query in every workspace from its repository. Your repositories and the code in Nekt are kept. Uninstalling the app directly on GitHub has the same effect.

## What you can do after connecting

* **Notebooks:** Link a Notebook to a repository when creating it, or through the **Versioning** column in the Notebooks list.
* **Queries:** Link a Query to a repository through the **Versioning** column in the Queries list.

Each resource is stored in its own folder in the repository. Linking it uploads its current code, a push to the linked branch updates it in Nekt, and saving it in Nekt commits to the branch. See [Versioning (Notebooks)](https://docs.nekt.com/notebooks/versioning.md) and [Versioning (Queries)](https://docs.nekt.com/queries/versioning.md) for the repository layout and sync details.
